A study has suggested that those living in the UK's capital are more prone to bartering for better deals on holiday than those dwelling elsewhere in the country.

Research from travel insurance provider AA reveals that 65 per cent of Londoners are prone to haggling while abroad compared to 55 per cent in the Midlands and Wales.

The research also showed that men are more likely to secure a bargain while abroad - 68 per cent - in comparison to 53 per cent of women, while 63 per cent of those aged over 55 are more likely to haggle their way to money off an item than their younger counterparts.

"It's great we're saving so much each year by haggling on our holidays - it shows Brits have got what it takes to bag a bargain and get the best deal possible. But when it comes to bartering back home, our stiff upper lip gets in the way," commented Christian Young, director of AA Travel Insurance.

The insurance provider notes that certain choice phrases could help to lower the price of goods on holiday, such as asking how much the item would be in cash, offering to pay half the asking price, insinuating that you cannot afford the product or will come back after you have mulled the offer over.

Holiday insurance provider AA also advises against overseas consumers' losing their temper or attempting to haggle at an inappropriate location - such as the supermarket.

Researching the item prior to battering and comparing prices in different shops is also a good idea, AA claims.
