Weekend-breakers and those looking to travel at this bank holiday weekend have been advised to check the travel news before setting off.

According to car insurance provider esure, 40 per cent of Britons are planning to travel by road this weekend as well as by rail and in the air.

Furthermore, the insurance provider warns that out of the 13.8 million UK residents set to travel at the weekend, four million will be delayed by an average of 90 minutes.

The insurer also notes that of those who journeyed on the recent May bank holiday weekend, 500,000 will abstain from doing so this bank holiday in order to avoid delays.

"Bank Holiday weekends are often plagued with travel delays, traffic jams and airline cancellations and it's likely that this last one of the year will follow suit - especially if the sun manages to come out," commented Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure.

He added that drivers should check the plan routes with contingencies, check travel news before setting off and take drinks and entertainment for children.

Meanwhile, according to Zurich more than 9.2 million Brits will travel by road on holiday this year.
