Tourists aged 18 to 29 are more likely to lie when making a travel insurance claim than older holidaymakers, according to a new study.

Direct Line Travel Insurance found that more than one in ten travellers polled had exaggerated their losses when making a claim, with 33 per cent of people in the 18 to 29 age bracket admitting to the offence.

This compared to 21 per cent of tourists aged 30 to 50 and seven per cent of travellers aged over 50 who stated that they had falsified a claim in the past.

Jewellery was found to be the most common subject of an exaggerated travel insurance claim, with 25 per cent of respondents citing the item as the motivation for their deceit. Cameras tailed close behind, accounting for 21 per cent of respondents' falsifications, while cash had been claimed under false pretences by 14 per cent of those polled.

Chris Price, business manager at Direct Line Travel Insurance, described the results as "worrying" and warned fraudsters that systems existed to detect any unlawful activity.

"Contemplating committing fraud is a serious matter and we would urge anyone about to claim on their travel insurance not to take this lightly," he said.

In related travel insurance news, research from AA Travel Insurance found that Spain is the most popular destination for holidaying Britons.
