As the current generation of over-50s makes plans to travel more than ever within the next five to ten years, adequate travel insurance cover is "essential", Alliance & Leicester has said.

According to new research carried out by the company, the 50-plus generation has cited an ambition to travel more, with 54 per cent hoping to travel more regularly and an additional 22 per cent anticipating a once-in-a-lifetime holiday within the next ten years.

New Zealand and Australia top the list of desirable destinations for the over-50s, followed by trips to Europe and the US. Some eight per cent expressed a desire to see more of their own country, while others cited China, Russia, Africa and the Antarctic as dream vacation destinations.

However, with some over-50s also expressing a desire to do more adventurous activities - such as off-roading, scuba diving and flying in a helicopter - Emma Walkley of Alliance & Leicester explained travel insurance is very important.

"Whether you are travelling locally or further afield, having adequate protection is essential," she said.

In related travel insurance news, recent research from Halifax found that people embarking on a winter ski holiday may be forced to cut their time on the slopes short if they become injured due to lack of fitness or preparation.
