Travel insurance is vital for people taking ski holidays this winter, a price comparison website has noted.

Online consumer resource moneysupermarket.com has asserted that people who fail to realise that they could need additional cover for winter sports activities may be setting themselves up for financial loss.

"The millions of people who do ski and snowboard cannot afford to skimp on their travel insurance,"said Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at price comparison site moneysupermarket.com.

He was speaking after an investigation by the website found that 28 per cent of skiers do not have travel insurance that covers them for injury to themselves or others, while a further 23 per cent could not remember whether or not they had purchased a policy.

According to moneysupermarket.com, there are a number of exclusions that travel insurance customers should look out for, including tobogganing, off-piste skiing and snowboarding, ski-jumping, heli-skiing and luging.

Meanwhile, it was remarked that apres-ski activities could also pose a risk to a travel insurance claim, with most policies said by Mr Gerrard to include a clause stating that skiing under the influence of alcohol or drugs could be grounds for invalidation.

Research from Bradford & Bingley recently found that last year's travel insurance claims made in December were more than 50 per cent higher than those made in September.
