A ski sector organisation has highlighted the importance of checking travel insurance small print for skiers.
The Ski Club of Great Britain notes that travel insurance policies can vary and there are a number of areas that snow sports fans in particular should pay close attention to.
Providers may define 'off-piste' in different ways and may classify it as specialist cover, points out the organisation, warning that it is possible for somebody without tailored cover to end up skiing off-piste accidentally.
It is important that all snow sports activities that tourists intend to participate in - dogsledding, tobogganing, showshoeing - are covered by their travel insurance policy, the Ski Club adds.
Travel delays are said to be another important component to consider.
"Although many policies will cover delays due to accidents or breakdowns, many will not pay out if the delay is caused by adverse snow conditions or avalanches blocking roads," the institution explains.
People working in resorts for the season are advised to take out a seasonal rather than an annual policy, as the latter tends not to cover more than 31 consecutive days, while anyone considering taking part in a fun race or mountaineering trip should ensure it is included in their policy according to the club.
Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com has recently highlighted that skiers cannot afford to "skimp" on their travel insurance.
