Tourists heading on long-haul holidays should purchase an appropriate, comprehensive travel insurance policy, STA Travel asserts.

According to a spokesperson for the travel agency, there is more risk involved with a long-haul trip and so travel insurance needs to be tailored and substantial.

For instance, she explains that in the event a passenger needs to be flown back to the UK from their holiday, repatriation is likely to cost more.

And the provider's commitment to provide a certain level of hospital care may mean that an ill tourist needs to be flown to another continent, incurring extra costs.

Adventure holidays and activities such as skiing, diving and hiking mean that the costs of mountain rescue and de-compressions tanks have to be considered by travel insurance providers, the spokesperson remarks.

These trips "tend to be more expensive than a weekend jaunt to Europe, therefore more costly to cancel if necessary", she says.

A recent Mintel report into Gap Years described it as the millennium's fastest growing travel sector, predicting its expansion to around £11 billion by 2010.
