Major providers tend to offer a "one size fits all" form of travel insurance that may not be appropriate for those with particular needs, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has noted.
According to the ABI, people with particular health needs may find that they need a specialist travel insurance product in order to ensure that their requirements are met.
"A high-street policy is designed as a one-size fits all in most cases. It doesn't provide cover for people with pre-existing medical conditions, so it excludes them from medical cover," spokesperson Kelly Ostler explained.
However, Ms Ostler said that there are many specialist insurers on the market, so anyone looking for a tailored policy should find their needs provided for.
People with cancer, for example, could look to a company such as Insure Pink to find a travel insurance product suitable for them.
"There is an active specialist market out there," she said.
Research conducted by charity Cancerbackup in June 2006 found that 70 per cent of people with the condition who attempted to buy travel insurance found the experience distressing and 90 per cent found it difficult or impossible to buy the product at all.
