Halifax has reported that the choice of holiday destination can impact upon the cost of travel insurance.

The provider notes that the high cost of medical treatment in the US will mean that the price of cover for travel to North America will usually exceed that paid for trips to the continent.

Other factors involved in calculating the cost of travel insurance include the age of the person travelling and their marital status.

David Bruce, a spokesperson for the firm, said: "Your age, circumstances, health [and] where you're travelling to all play a part."

He added that for a traveller to pick up insurance for approximately £30, it is likely that they will be a single person under the age of 30, heading to Europe.

In January 2007, Bupa reported that the most common skiing and snowboarding injury - torn ligaments - can cost approximately £670 to treat in France, with this figure rising to around £2,280 in the US, highlighting the importance of taking out medical insurance prior to travel.
