Skiers should ensure they are in good health in order to minimise accidents and injuries, travel insurance provider Halifax has recommended.

The company has published research showing that 38 per cent of skiers and snowboarders went on a winter sports holiday in 2006 without being physically prepared, with 19 per cent claiming that they were "lucky" to end their holiday uninjured.

According to Halifax, while travel insurance can minimise the financial loss incurred when an injury is suffered, it is best for people on a sports break to ensure they are physically fit enough to avoid accidents as far as possible.

"Clearly prevention is better than the cure and a few months of pre-holiday training can help you to cope with the strain of winter sports, as well as to build up your stamina," said Paul Birkhead, senior manager of pricing and underwriting for Halifax Travel Insurance.

He added, however, that the company's Winter Sports cover can enable customers to make a claim for up to £200 a week for a maximum of two weeks on a ski pass that is unused.

In related sector news, the Association of British Insurers recently admitted that standard travel insurance products tend to be designed on a "one size fits all" model, but remarked that policies for people suffering from illnesses such as cancer are available from specialist providers.
