Travel insurance firm esure is advising would-be holidaymakers to ensure they make all recommended checks before they depart.
Although many eager jetsetters may have grabbed holiday bargains in the January sales, the company suggests that this saving may be redundant should severe weather or visa problems come into play.
According to a recent survey by esure, less than half of all those planning to get away check for weather warnings and 47 per cent do not visit the foreign office website to see if restrictions have been put in place.
Other potential problems include hurricane season and travel visas - which can take time to organise prior to departure.
"Delays and even flight cancellations in such extreme weather are inevitable therefore it's vital to make sure you have travel insurance to make sure you're covered," said Jacky Brown, head of travel insurance at esure. "Come holiday time, you could be caught out."
Those looking for a suitable travel insurance policy may find a wider and cheaper range of deals available online.
Many choose to purchase single trip cover, although annual options can also be bought from some providers.
