Age discrimination is hampering older consumers' efforts to buy travel insurance, according to one related organisation.
Charity Age Concern has asserted that ageism is particularly prominent in the insurance industry, with about one-third of older consumers reporting discrimination involving such companies.
A spokesperson for the organisation pointed out that a growing number of older people have the time, funds and desire to travel, but are being rejected by travel insurance companies who are reluctant to address their circumstances.
"Many healthy older people want to travel, yet they are frequently shown the door by ageist travel insurers," the spokesperson remarked.
According to the charity, 92 per cent of travel insurance policies impose upper age limits specifying a point after which they will not provide cover.
She said that older people tend to be wealthier than their younger counterparts and many wish to use this wealth to travel in later life, unrestricted by work or family demands.
"When older people themselves see no barriers to travelling and there are no relevant medical issues then companies should not restrict their activities," the Age Concern representative stated.
Saga has reported that its long-haul holiday business has doubled in size over the last decade, representing a growing demand for travel among its over-fifties client base.
