People on a ski holiday should behave responsibly to comply with the winter sports cover on their travel insurance policy, an InsureandGo spokesman has cautioned.
According to Perry Wilson of the travel insurance specialist, the warning comes following the release of recent research on alcohol use and skiing which found that an estimated 1.38 million skiers and snowboarders have hit the slopes while drunk.
"You're on holiday, everyone likes a drink, but people have got to do it in moderation," he explained.
Mr Wilson added that every travel insurance policy has an issue of responsibility and that skiers and snowboarders need to take care to avoid risks outside it.
He explained that as there are no set definitions for being under the influence of alcohol, every drink-related claim on a travel insurance policy must be examined on an individual basis.
"When you're combining alcohol with a dangerous sport, like skiing, you can cause a lot of damage to people," he said.
The survey conducted by InsureandGo also found that of the people who admitted they have skied or snowboarded after drinking alcohol, four per cent claimed to have caused a serious injury to themselves or another skier.
Some 19 per cent admitted they have had some sort of accident while drunk on the slopes.
