In the wake of recent fuel price hikes, one price comparison website notes that people collecting pensions may need assistance with increased energy bills.
According to Moneyfacts.co.uk, a large number of people surviving on a state pension are afraid to turn their heating up because of the increased costs this may incur.
Website representative Andrew Hagger says that regulator Ofgem should step in to protect older Britons from the problems associated with high fuel bills in winter.
"There is a real danger that many could freeze to death as we approach the coldest part of winter," maintains Mr Hagger.
He adds that older people are of a different generation to the current one that he claims "doesn't worry if they can't pay their bills".
And the product comparing expert states that while the price rises are in response to increases in the cost of wholesale gas, the "power giants" are still to make billions of pounds in profits this year.
His comments come in the same week as campaigning groups call for John Hutton to acknowledge the danger facing households in fuel poverty, the number of which has soared from two to four million in fours years, according to the National Consumer Council and the alliance groups.
