The potential dangers of the used-car market have been highlighted to consumers by one loan provider.

AA Personal Loans is highlighting the importance of doing comprehensive and accurate research before investing in a second-hand car.

Such vehicles may have problems that are not immediately visible to the shopper and that are either deliberately or unknowingly obscured by the dealership, the firm points out.

Citing previous research showing that one in four motorists would sell a car and intentionally omit to communicate vehicles faults to the buyer, the firm asserts that common perceptions of who is and is not trustworthy may obscure the important details of a car purchase deal.

New research from the firm draws attention to some stereotypical biases among the sample surveyed, the company claims.

Because the largest proportion of respondents (17 per cent) identified Lorraine Kelly - a woman - as the celebrity they would be most likely to regard as trustworthy, AA Personal Loans asserts that "many would prefer to buy a car from a woman".

However, Mark Huggins, head of the firm, states that "it's important that car buyers are vigilant no matter whom they are buying from".

Cesarina Holm-Kander, financial columnist and television presenter, has this week advised people to be "proactive" with personal finance.
