A loans company has drawn attention to the benefits of driving 4x4s.
Research by AA Personal Loans has found that despite a common perception that the vehicles are not commonly used in an off-road capacity, a significant proportion do drive their vehicles in fields or mud.
Although 76 per cent of those surveyed are most likely to use their off-road car while shopping for groceries and 72 per cent cited motorway runs as a likely site for the use of such vehicles, 42 per cent claimed to have taken their car down a muddy track.
The company cites the results as evidence that environmental concerns about 4x4s do not take their various uses into account.
"Our tracking study of British car buying habits shows that, while across the country at large people are making a move towards smaller, more environmentally friendly cars, some city dwellers remain staunch followers of the 4x4," asserts Mark Huggins, head of AA Personal Loans.
Some 18 per cent of respondents claimed to use their 4x4 on the school run, which the company cites as evidence that complaints about the vehicles "clogging up roads" in the morning are unjustified.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs conducted a poll last year in which a third of respondents professed to encourage family and friends to do more to help the environment.
