A new initiative from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is hoping to achieve this standard by improving the clarity of information provided to people both online and over the phone when taking out protection insurance or other similar products, such as life insurance or home insurance.

Member companies have released guidelines based on earlier assessments of application form questions.

ABI director of general insurance and health Nick Starling has commented that the changes hope to improve people's confidence and understanding of the products available, in order to bring "peace of mind to millions of individuals".

Mr Starling said that in addition to protection insurance, there has also been a "growing trend" of people taking out both life insurance and critical illness products in recent years.

"This latest ABI initiative will help ensure that the UK uses world-class online and telephone processes to help people disclose all the relevant information," he added.

Moneysupermarket.com head of protection Emma Walker commented on the ABI's guidelines: "Arranging to buy protection online or by phone provides a great deal of flexibility and ease for the consumer."
