A growing number of UK investors are "supportive" of hedge funds and favour wider access to the product, according to new research.
Findings from F&C Investments show that just ten per cent of Britons would support wider restrictions on hedge funds, while 55 per cent are in favour of greater public access.
A further 35 per cent of consumers believe that more access should be given to hedge funds, but only with the help of specialist fund managers.
"Investors are becoming more sophisticated in their investment choices and recognise the benefits of hedge funds as a risk reducing tool in their investment portfolios," said Francois Barthelemy, a partner at F&C's hedge fund operation F&C Partners.
"Provided that hedge funds are managed by teams of professionals, there is no reason why they should be considered any more risky than the average equity or fixed income investment."
The research also revealed that 64 per cent of investors think hedge funds pose less financial risk than shares.
A recent Financial Express survey revealed that 38.1 per cent of Trustnet investors would opt for private equity, while 19.2 per cent would choose hedge funds, futures or options derivates over alternative assets such as classic cars and fine art.
