Certified shares continue to be held as valued investments by UK savers, with one fifth of the population currently having such an investment, figures reveal.

While certified shares have traditionally been acquired through a will or family inheritance, new research by Barclays Stockbrokers has found that 63 per cent of the savers questioned invested directly in this type of investment.

Furthermore, far from being passive investments, 45 per cent of investors claimed to have checked the performance and value of their shares over the past seven days, with the average value of certified shares held by Britons currently standing at £13,485.

"A number of our clients invest in certified shares and value having their investments in a physical format," said Amy Nauiokas, managing director and head of Barclays Stockbrokers.

"While many people may perceive certified shares to be a less modern form of investment, our research has proven that those people who invest in shares this way take an active interest in how these companies are performing and track this on a regular basis."

The study also found that one in ten 18 to 24-year-olds currently hold shares in this format, while 71 per cent of the investors questioned expressed their optimism that certified shares represent a strong long-term investment.
