Nintendo Wiis should not be purchased without a consideration of their home insurance implications, it has been claimed.

According to Halifax, the most-wanted seasonal gift for 2007 is also one of the most risky in terms of home insurance, with the threat of accidental damage while playing the console forgotten by over-eager present-buyers.

The home insurance provider has warned parents buying the console for their child or themselves to ensure their policy covers accidental damage through Wii use, asserting that players can cause hundreds or even thousands of pounds worth of damage to TV sets while using the product.

Senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance Martyn Foulds explained that the insurer has recently registered a number of claims for TV screen damage caused by players accidentally letting go of the Wii handset.

"With some plasma screen TVs retailing at over £2,000, householders would be well advised to make sure they are properly covered and tell their insurer if they have a television of high value," he said.

New figures from Hitwise show that, due to a Wii shortage in the UK, websites dedicated to sourcing the product have enjoyed growth, with Wii Consoles increasing its market share by 265 per cent last month.
