One home insurance provider recommends turning off all power at the mains before floods.
NFU Mutual advises that its experience from helping customers whose homes and businesses have suffered flood damage has highlighted the importance of dealing with such incidences in the appropriate way.
As well as switching off the power supply, homeowners are informed by the insurer that they should unplug all electrical goods and cover doors, windows and airbricks with sandbags, plywood or metal sheets.
Sandbags can be acquired from local councils, NFU Mutual notes.
Meanwhile, home insurance customers are advised to move furniture away from walls, roll up carpets and remove curtains.
"At times of flooding our local network of agents really comes into its own with local staff visiting policyholders who have suffered severe damage, giving advice on the spot, making arrangements for damage inspections and in some cases settling claims immediately," states Richard Pilkington, technical claims manager.
The Times has noted a "sense of deja vu" about this month's weather, as rainfall hits above-average levels and areas of England and Wales grow susceptible to flooding.
