Poorer families need to arrange building and contents insurance to protect their property from flood damage in years to come, it has been claimed.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) is convinced of the need for people who live in social housing in various parts of the country to have adequate insurance cover against floods like those witnessed earlier this year.
But the industry body adds that such individuals should be targeted by the government when raising awareness of the issues surrounding insurance if they are to be suitably protected in the event of any future floods.
In response to the newly published Pitt Review into how the recent floods were handled, Biba has called on the government to improve water defences and to raise awareness of relevant insurance issues among poorer communities in the UK.
"Government should ensure that local authorities provide or include home insurance within their social housing contracts," a statement from Biba reads.
According to Biba, the authorities should also "ensure that low-income families understand the importance and value of both buildings and contents insurance and are encouraged to arrange protection for their possessions".
The Pitt Review was commissioned by government ministers and in it Sir Michael Pitt suggests that Britain could have suffered far more than it did after the floods during the summer.
