A home insurance policy containing a "Santa Clause" to provide additional cover for Christmas presents and food during the holidays can provide peace of mind, NFU Mutual has said.

According to Laura Wood, spokesperson for the home insurance provider, people living in rural areas may also be susceptible to power cuts during periods of bad weather, which could destroy Christmas food items stored in a refrigerator or freezer.

In addition, she said people often forget that Christmas gifts will also add to the value of many people's home contents in the lead-up to the winter holiday season.

"People do not consider the cumulative value of the gifts which they store or bring into their home during the festive season and it is vital that they remember that the value of these presents will impact on their home contents insurance," she said.

Ms Wood added that some home insurance policies, including the one provided by NFU Mutual, automatically increase home contents cover and freezer cover over the festive period, but that it is important for everyone to check their individual policies for any restrictions.

According to research published by high street bank Halifax, an estimated seven million households in the UK did not have home contents insurance in the lead-up to the 2005 Christmas season.
