Consumers looking to enhance their home security to protect their expensive Christmas gifts have been given a number of tips, which could also reduce their home insurance costs.
Halifax Home Insurance warns that burglars will usually target properties that they believe are a soft touch for breaking and entering.
It has advised the fitting of visible key operated locks to windows, especially those downstairs, while adding that security lights can be an effective measure to deter thieves and also act as a warning signal.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at the firm, said: "Don't leave doors and windows unlocked when rooms are unoccupied, even if you are in the house, as many opportunist burglaries occur when the owners are in the house and burglars have simply reached in to grab whatever they can."
He also urged homeowners to make sure their burglar alarm is in a visible position and to ensure it is in operation when they are out of the home.
Bradford & Bingley recently reported that the Christmas season is an important time of year for people to make sure they have sufficient home insurance cover.
