Winter weather heightens the need for home insurance, it has been advised.
Product provider Sainsbury's Home Insurance has pointed out that harsh weather conditions during the coldest season raises the chance of households being damaged by external conditions.
Head of Sainsbury's Home Insurance Steve Johnson said that chimneys and roofs are particularly vulnerable because they are subjected to the highest wind speeds, yet often tend to be forgotten because they are not often in full view.
"With winter approaching, the risk to homes from bad weather increases, but there is a lot that home owners can do to reduce losses through the maintenance of their properties," Mr Johnson said.
The company advised that homeowners carry out an annual 'home MOT' to ensure their properties are in a good state of repair, as failing to do so could result in claims not being met or only being paid in part.
Replacing any roof tiles that are loose, checking drains and gutters regularly for blockages and making sure that loft insulation is thick enough are among the measures recommended by the provider.
Legal & General issued similar advice last week, commenting that home maintenance should be a priority for home insurance customers this winter.
