The winter festive season is an important time of the year for people to make sure they have enough home insurance cover, Bradford & Bingley has said.
According to the firm, more than 76,000 households in the UK are targeted by domestic burglars over the Christmas season, which could prove costly for families without cover as people are expected to spend around £385 each on gifts this season.
"With so much money and effort invested in the Christmas period, people should make sure that they don't overlook the necessity of protecting their home and its contents from unwanted visitors," said David Foyle, head of general insurance at Bradford & Bingley/full stop
In addition to making sure a home insurance policy provides adequate cover, the firm also offered a list of suggestions for making sure your belongings stay safe over the holidays.
The suggestions include keeping presents out of view and away from windows, securing doors and windows with key-operated locks and making sure all electrical Christmas decorations and lights are wired correctly.
According to Halifax, one in five people plan to travel over Christmas with 20 per cent admitting they do not intend to increase security measures at their home while they are away.
