A home insurance industry practitioner has claimed that the product is the "last line of defence" against floods.

Lloyds TSB's managing director Phil Loney was speaking in response to Michael Pitt's independent review of the summer floods that struck the UK in 2007.

According to Mr Loney, consumers should be aware that this year's flooding was not an isolated incident and that Britain can expect similar extreme weather in the future.

Consumers should take on board the lessons learnt this year regarding home insurance, asserted Mr Loney.

He said: "It's true that insurance is the last line of defence in disaster such as the floods, but clearly there are steps we can all take to try and prevent the flood waters doing their worst."

The bank has launched a new website in association with the National Flood Forum to act as a resource for homeowners whose houses could be damaged by future flooding.

Among the features of the new website are a guide on how to form a community group through which to raise flood-based concerns with local authorities, as well as warnings about rogue traders and a list of preventative measures householders can take.

Halifax has described winter as the ideal time to undertake home security improvements.
