Halifax is emphasising the importance of home insurance for seasonal tourists.
Families whose festive celebrations involve a trip away from their house should check their home insurance cover is appropriate as burglary is a risk at this time of year, the provider warns.
A study from Halifax shows that 20 per cent of people are planning to travel over the Christmas period, with the same number planning to implement no extra security measures during this time.
Some 34 per cent of those polled expressed concern about a seasonal break-in, with 16 per cent of respondents planning to fix security cameras to their home.
Marty Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, comments that people may overlook the significance of home security amid the excitement surrounding the gift-giving season.
"We are urging householders, especially those who plan to go away on holiday, to take measures to safeguard their home. This will go some way to avoiding an unpleasant return and of course a ruined Christmas," he says.
Mr Foulds advises installing a burglar alarm or fitting timer lights to deter prospective robbers from unlawful activity.
The company has this week launched a competition through which customers who buy home insurance between December 1st and January 4th are automatically entered into a £1,500 prize draw.
