A home insurance provider is advising householders to check their security precautions thoroughly.

Elaine Parkes, head of technical services for Legal & General's general insurance business, asserts that Britons should evaluate the performance of their smoke and burglar alarms regularly, as well as checking wiring, loft insulation and pipes.

"Installing a burglar alarm, good quality locks and security lighting or living in a Neighbourhood Watch area are all good preventative measures to help keep our homes secure. But a few simple checks could mean that our properties are safer and so avoid the need to make a claim under a household insurance policy," she says.

Ms Parkes was speaking after a survey from the company found that 50 per cent of people have never checked the wiring in their home, while 33 per cent have not assessed their loft insulation, 34 per cent have not evaluated their pipes and 28 per cent have neglected their boiler.

Furthermore, over 80 per cent of people have a smoke alarm but ten per cent do not assess its effectiveness with regular checks, while of the 30 per cent of homes fitted with a security alarm, more than 50 per cent do not check it frequently.

Meanwhile, Nationwide recently launched a home insurance deal offering customers a saving on their previous arrangement or £100.
