An insurance industry body has stated that home insurance will cover most potential DIY accidents.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association has said that people who hold a comprehensive home insurance policy will usually be covered for problems that typically occur while conducting DIY activities, such as hitting a water pipe with a drill, for example.

"Most DIY disasters would be covered, as long as you have the right cover on your household policy. In the main, that would be accidental damage cover," explained technical services officer Steve Foulsham.

Mr Foulsham added that accidental damage cover for both building and contents tends to be an optional extra on most home insurance policies.

However, DIY-enthusiasts who steer clear of recklessness should not need to worry about their home insurance provider refusing to pay out on the grounds that he or she was not qualified to undertake home improvements.

He said that there is a general understanding that most people will attempt household improvements to a certain degree and providing their activity is lawful then their accidental damage cover should be sufficient.

Research from Zurich has found that one in five people who attempted home renovation work alone had to subsequently seek professional help to rectify their mistakes, with bills for this work averaging at £280, according to the BBC.
