Novice DIY-ers should not risk invalidating their household cover when knocking down walls within the property, Halifax Home Insurance has warned.
According to a new survey by the bank, more and more homeowners are opting to get rid of walls and expand the space inside their house.
Some 2.9 million rooms have disappeared throughout the past five years this way, with 2.2 million more on the agenda for renovations in 2008.
However, while knocking down an internal wall can turn a relatively small room into a larger and more comfortable living area, Halifax has urged people to use a professional tradesperson and notify their home insurance provider before any work begins.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at the company, also recommended employing the services of a structural engineer prior to the project.
"Any damage to a weight-bearing wall that results in ceiling collapse or other damage could also invalidate a buildings insurance policy," he continued.
"They should also seek building regulations advice from their local council or risk difficulty trying to sell their home further down the line."
Homeowners looking to switch their buildings or household cover may find cheaper deals online.
