Before subscribing to an extended warranty for an electrical item, people should check their home insurance policy, as accidental damage may already be covered, according to Consumer Direct.

It is important for consumers to assess the value of taking on an extended warranty and to consider their legal rights when considering a purchase, said Michele Shambrook, operations manager at the government-funded consumer advice service.

"If the appliance breaks down within a reasonable period of time, the retailer is obliged to put the problem right by repairing or replacing the product," she explained.

But if people are considering an extended warranty package, she said the service is only really worth it if the warranty covers things that aren't protected by contents cover on a home insurance policy.

She also advised that people should not make any rushed decisions about purchasing an extended warranty, as plans must be offered for up to 30 days after the item was originally sold.

In related home insurance news, Halifax is warning people with the popular Nintendo Wii gaming console to make sure their television is covered under their contents policy in case an over-excited player accidentally lets go of their handset while playing and damages the screen.
