Abbey has recommended a number of ways homeowners can minimise their vulnerability to thieves this New Year's Eve and help to avoid a home insurance claim.
According to the high street bank, one in six Britons are too worried about the risk of burglary to leave their home on December 31st and 77 per cent said they would worry about safety at new year.
Research from Abbey also found that 1.1 million people have been the victim of burglary on previous New Year's Eves - meaning many more might be concerned as 2008 is welcomed in.
The bank suggested that people use timer switches or leave lights on when they go out, as this can give the impression that the house is occupied.
Opportunistic thieves may also be deterred if a security alarm system is fitted and the lender also advised people to hide the packaging from this Christmas's expensive presents.
For those who are looking to update or purchase home insurance, it is worthwhile to remember that home contents insurance is different to building cover and the two do not necessarily have to be bought from the same company.
