The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised consumers to assess their home insurance requirements after Christmas.
Seasonal gifts can raise the value of home contents, with potentially high-profile purchases hiking the threat of crime, the body warned.
Spokesperson Malcolm Tarling said that the value of items stored in the home goes up not just during the Christmas period but in the subsequent months as well, with pricey presents like iPods and digital TVs being easy to steal, but also easy to conceal.
Mr Tarling emphasised the importance of vigilance over the Christmas period and elaborated on the relevance of home insurance at this time.
"Many policies will now automatically increase your sum insured on a temporary basis for the months either side of Christmas to take into account the value of items that you've got in your home," he explained.
The ABI spokesperson noted that students who may be leaving properties unoccupied for the Christmas period when they return to the family home should check their home insurance policy for any unoccupied property requirements.
Sainsbury's Bank recently advised home insurance policy holders to ensure their property is prepared for harsher winter weather.
