Energy bills may be lower for customers with paperless billing, according to one financial product monitoring service.

Consumer watchdog Which? advises that switching to paperless billing could result in lower bills for customers finding it difficult to deal with recent hikes from providers including npower and British Gas.

Scottish Power has this week become the latest fuel firm to announce cost increases, with Which? noting that customers of the company based in London who use 3,330 kilowatt hours of electricity or gas on a standard tariff could pay more than £140 more per year following the move.

The "majority" of British households will be affected by these changes, according to Which?

However, the organisation comments that there are still ways to avoid substantial budgetary pressures.

"With energy suppliers offering impressive discounts to customers who opt for paperless billing and pay by monthly Direct Debit, there are definitely still ways to minimise the impact on your pocket," it points out.

BT has also this week announced price changes that could result in higher bills for some homeowners.
