People looking for high-speed broadband for a low cost can now choose from more deals than ever, according to one price comparison website.

A new report from uSwitch.com notes that the standard broadband connection speed is now 16 times faster than in 2004, with more than 15 million households in Britain now spending a collective £3 billion subscribing to an internet deal.

Broadband prices have fallen by 36 per cent over the past four years and have now reached their lowest level, the organisation's data indicates.

The biggest fall in costs has been initiated by AOL, which charged customers £28 for a five megabit connection in 2004 and now charges £15 for an eight megabit service, representing a drop of 46 per cent.

Orange has retained its four-year tenure as the most expensive broadband provider for a standalone internet connection, imposing bills of £20 a month for an eight megabit connection.

Steve Weller, head of communications services at the site, asserts: "With broadband both the cheapest and the fastest it's ever been, our love affair with the internet is set to reach great heights this year. We predict that prices will stabilise, but customers will be offered more for their money, with companies continuing to increase speeds."

The consumer watchdog last November reported that more than a quarter of broadband customers were unhappy with the speed their provider was giving them.
