The current account, called NatWest Adapt, targets 11 to 18-year-olds and comes with a Solo bankcard that the customer can individualise.

Teenagers can customise their cards with personal photographs and artwork, or choose from an image library on the NatWest website that includes EMI album covers and cast members from the High School Musical films.

Mark Worthington, NatWest's head of youth banking, said that individualised bank cards are a good way for teenagers to incorporate their personalities into their personal financial management.

"Along with personalising their ringtones, Facebook pages and clothes, now they can show their individuality by putting a favourite image on their bankcard, making having a current account more fun," he said.

Mr Worthington added that having a bank card, especially one without an overdraft, is an important step for young people on the road to adulthood.

"This is an ideal age to learn about using a pin to buy things, what a bank statement means and checking how much money is in the account before shopping," he said.

April research from the Learning and Skills Council revealed that the average age for a young person to open a bank account is ten, indicating that pre-teens and teenagers are becoming more financially literate.
