Halifax has announced that it is to register the details of dormant current accounts whose holders have not yet been traced on the Unclaimed Assets Register.

The bank claims that this is the first institution in the UK to take this step, while it will also continue its press advertising and direct mailing to customers.

Furthermore, from January next year, the firm will use global information solutions provider Experian to seek out its remaining "lost" customers.

Halifax reports that it has already reunited its customers with £14.4 million of the funds held in dormant current and savings accounts at the firm a total of 33 per cent of all the sums held in such vehicles.

Mike Regnier, head of savings at the company, said: "We have made very good progress with our campaign to reunite customers with their funds."

He added that the bank is paying search agents to rightfully reunite consumers with their money, with the firm meeting the cost of this staff itself.

Last month, the British Bankers' Association revealed that almost a quarter of a million consumers had visited its webpages set up regarding the reclamation of dormant assets.
