A new current account has been launched to benefit the over-50 generation, which has more time and money for things like travelling than younger generations, according to Alliance & Leicester.

The Premier 50 current account features annual worldwide travel insurance for those aged 50 to 79 to cater to an increasing number of empty-nesters.

According to the bank's Steve Gracey, with nearly 11 million people aged 50 or older making plans to travel more regularly in the coming years, the generation has specific needs, which the new current account addresses.

"The over-50s are a more and more recognised age group, because they are much more savvy than their younger counterparts," he said.

He added that members of this generation tend to have more time and money than their younger counterparts as they prepare for retirement and for their grown children to fly the nest.

According to recent research conducted by Alliance & Leicester, more people over 50 cited travel as their main priority than those who chose spending more time with their family and friends, improving their physical fitness and seeking out a more healthy way of life.

The study also found that 11 per cent of those who plan to travel intend to do so on their own.
