People who plan to take a Valentine's Day holiday may wish to book their getaway well in advance to avoid racking up a "massive" bill on their credit cards, the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) has suggested.

And although the best deals are to be found between Halloween and Christmas, it is "always a good time to book" a romantic city-break, according to a spokesperson for the association.

"You can always find a deal," the spokesman said. "You don't want to get stuck with a massive credit card bill after Christmas and realise that you can't afford to go away."

Those looking to address their credit card debt following an excessive Christmas spend have been advised by the Consumer Credit Counselling Service to try and pay more than the minimum monthly amount to avoid potentially high interest charges.

According to a survey released by YouGov, Paris was the top destination for UK couples celebrating Valentine's Day in 2006, although Venice was the number one choice for a city break for people living in the Midlands and Wales.

Barcelona, Spain came third in the poll.

The average male is thought to have spent around £44.63 on Valentine's Day last year.
