New research from car insurance firm esure has found that around 26 million motorists are not clear on the current guidelines for car headlight use set out in the Highway Code.
According to the study, 99 per cent of motorists have been dazzled by the full-beam headlights of an oncoming car, while more than 2.5 million admitted they had never used their fog lights.
The car insurance firm also reported that 54 per cent of drivers said they have driven without headlights by accident at least once in the past year, with one million crashing or nearly missing an accident as a result of improper use.
"As the nights become longer and darker, it is essential that motorists use their headlights properly while driving," said Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure.
"Drivers must be extra vigilant during the winter and ensuring you are driving with the correct lights on is an important issue when it comes to driving safely," he added.
In related motoring news, according to a survey published by Experian last week, super mini vehicles, such as the Nissan Micra and the Renault Clip, are now the best-selling type of used vehicle in the UK due to their positive environmental performance and high fuel efficiency.
