Specialist car insurance can be more costly than comparable products from the high street, moneysupermarket.com has said.

According to the price comparison website, motorists who immediately opt for a specialist insurer, such as one who focuses on women or the elderly, can often miss out on valuable savings by not shopping around for their car insurance.

"Women should not be swayed by female-friendly adverts for cheaper car insurance," said Richard Mason, moneysupermarket.com's director of insurance.

And although some specialist providers include extras such as handbag cover or a free mobile phone, he said it is important for drivers to evaluate whether or not these extras are beneficial.

He added that elderly drivers should also "scour the market" for the best deal, rather than relying on a specialist car insurance provider.

"Chances are they will be beaten on premiums by the bigger, better-known brands," he said.

Citing several examples, Mr Mason went on to point out that premiums provided by specialist car insurance providers can often be between 30 and 100 per cent higher than their equivalent on the high street.

In related motoring news, Experian has released a new environmental report, which evaluates the levels of carbon dioxide that are emitted by new and used vehicles.

The information can then be displayed on cars to help buyers make informed decisions about their purchases.
