Car insurance providers may treat applications from repeating speeding offenders with scepticism for many years following the last offence, drivers have been warned.

While two convictions for speeding can raise car insurance premiums by just under 25 per cent and a six-month ban can raise costs by about half, moneysupermarket.com has pointed out that one conviction may not result in long-term option curtailment.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, says that people with one speeding offence would typically be written off by about a third of providers, while anyone with more than one blemish on their record may find their options narrow substantially and the costs of purchasing car insurance rise.

"If you lose your licence speeding, you will have the expense and inconvenience of public transport and then when you return behind the wheel you will be hit with greatly increased premiums for up to five years," he asserts.

Ensleigh is cited as one car insurance provider that is particularly intolerant of speeders, pushing up premiums by 74 per cent for the most severe cases.

In related news, the AA has drawn attention to inconsistencies in publicity about biofuel and its benefits.
