One car insurance company has advised that drivers should keep their vehicles clutter-free.

Liverpool Victoria, which recently rebranded to LV=, has noted that leaving clutter in the car is potentially a safety hazard, as well as possibly attracting thieves.

Motor spokesperson with the company Emma Holyer said that rubbish left in cars raise the risk of an obstacle getting trapped beneath a pedal, while expensive items such as iPods that are not stored in a tidy place may be noticed by thieves and raise the risk of crime.

"So cleaning out your car frequently is not only easier on the eye, but safer and easier on the pocket too," she said.

Ms Holyer also pointed out that keeping windscreen and mirrors clean is a legal requirement that seems to be bypassed by many drivers, citing research showing that 89 per cent of owners clean their cars less than once a week.

The organisation's poll also discovered that 55 per cent of drivers do not check whether their windscreens are clean before beginning a journey while 81 per cent fail to assess their headlights and 63 per cent do not look at the cleanliness of their wing mirrors.

In related news, elephant.co.uk recently noted that self-made celebrities pay more for their car insurance than people in more traditional occupations.
