Car insurance provider Direct Line is making victims of vandalism the subject of a new initiative. A new policy is being introduced that protects the no-claims discount for car insurance policy holders who are the victims of vandalism. Direct Line explains that the benefit covers against acts such as slashed tires and graffiti, but also more common and perhaps less substantial crimes like cars being keyed. "Unprovoked damage to your car is frustrating and distressing enough, without having the added worry of paying for the damage," observes spokesperson Tony Chilcott. Research from the company shows that some seven per cent of car owners experienced damage to their car in some form during 2007, with those who live in terraced houses and flats more at risk than the general public on average. Some 32 per cent of incidents of vandalism were reported to the police, according to the study, which identified a trend of victims feeling that police were powerless to act against such crimes. Britannia previously reported that motorists were most likely to break down on January 2nd due to poor weather, heavy traffic and a period of vehicle inactivity over Christmas.
