Winter drivers can take a number of precautions to stay protected on the roads in 2008, according to online car insurance firm insurancewide.com.

According to James Harrison, chief executive of the company, drivers should take special care in the winter months to check the weather forecast, traffic news and road conditions before beginning their journeys.

But he also cautioned drivers about less obvious precautions, which could prevent a morning car theft that may not be covered by a car insurance policy.

"When the snow hits us overnight, many people follow the same morning routine - scrape off the ice from the windscreen and leave the car running with the keys in the ignition to fully defrost," he said.

Mr Harrison pointed out that this leaves a perfect opportunity for car thieves to steal an unattended vehicle.

"Beware that the majority of car insurance policies stipulate that any claims you make may be void when leaving your keys in the car or leaving it unattended," he explained.

In related winter news, the Met Office has cautioned UK residents about strong winds and cold weather throughout the rest of the week, with the possibility of snow in some areas.

The national weather service has advised winter travellers to keep up to date with the latest forecasts, as well as information about rail and road conditions.
