Leaving vehicles unattended to warm up the engine can increase the risk of theft, car insurance policy holders have been warmed.

Sainsbury's has highlighted the threat to motorists who fail to vigilantly watch their cars while attempting to increase the temperature, with frosting - the theft of cars left in these circumstances - said to be a real risk at this time of year.

Joanne Mallon, car insurance manager with Sainsbury's, asserted that motorists should remember to watch their vehicles carefully.

"When it's freezing outside it can be tempting to leave the engine running to speed up the defrosting process while you nip back inside to finish getting ready. But this could have terrible consequences and you may find that you're not insured against it," she said.

About 333,000 households have made complaints about frosting incidents, representing some 66,000 such crimes each year, Sainsbury's noted.

Recommendations issued by the financial services provider include checking the battery, monitoring oil, water and brake fluid levels regularly and always keeping a stock of antifreeze.

Meanwhile, Halifax Home Insurance has highlighted the need to secure household belongings in light of sever weather warnings from the Met Office.
