People applying for a car insurance policy with elephant.co.uk will now be able to choose the job title of "celebrity" in a list of occupations.
However, the insurance company's managing director Brian Martin said that with the increase in self-styled celebrities as a result of reality TV shows such as Big Brother, the company "couldn't ignore" the fact that potential customers would not fit into any other categories.
But Mr Martin pointed out that selecting celebrity status on a car insurance application could be more expensive than other more traditional occupations.
For example, 26-year-old Big Brother star Jade Goody would pay around 22 per cent more for her car insurance as a celebrity than as a dental nurse, her former occupation.
"We just wanted to point out that being famous does also have its downsides and often there's a price to pay for such fame," Mr Martin said.
"Celebrities have to pay more for things like insurance just because they are famous," he added.
However, celebrities may be willing to offset the increased cost of their car insurance policy by taking into consideration the value of freebies, such as gift baskets presented to stars at awards ceremonies.
According to the New York Times, Gwyneth Paltrow was presented with the gift of a cruise to Tasmania and Antarctica at the Golden Globe Awards.
