Budget is now offering a new short-term car insurance policy, which is now available.

According to the company, short-term car insurance is ideal for a number of reasons, including borrowing a car from a friend or parent, teaching someone to drive in your car and test-driving a new vehicle.

In addition, Budget claims that temporary car insurance can reassure the vehicle owner that their no-claims bonus will remain intact in the event of an accident.

"Many people at various times have needed a short-term policy, whether borrowing a friend's van to move house or test-driving a car," said Matthew Gledhill, managing director of Budget Insurance.

He added that although short-term products are sometimes difficult to find, the latest offering from Budget has a simple application process and is competitively priced from £6 per day.

This week, price comparison website moneysupermarket.com claimed that speeding offences could increase a car insurance premium by around 25 per cent.

Drivers who have been put under a six-month ban for speeding may be even harder hit on their car insurance premiums, as renewals can increase by around 50 per cent for "serial speeders".

The site recommended that drivers shop around online for the best deals on car insurance.
