With the winter months bringing darker evenings and icy conditions, drivers wanting to avoid accidents and car insurance claims have been advised to take sensible precautions at this time of year.

Motorists have been urged to make sure their car is ready for the winter by using anti-freeze as appropriate and ensuring their tyres are at the legal depth and able to cope with wet and icy roads, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) said.

The association also advises those taking long journeys in hazardous conditions to let the person they are travelling to know their expected time of arrival.

Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive at Biba, commented: "It's actually at its worst when the clocks change and all of a sudden someone who was driving home in the light is driving home in the dark."

He added that drivers should take a survival kit and mobile phone with them in case of a breakdown and to also keep their car insurance details in their glovebox.

The AA recently forecast that 27th December and 2nd January would be the busiest days for breakdowns, while adding that it attended to over 175,000 accidents over the Christmas period last year.
